Sexual & Reproductive Health

Empowering individuals with knowledge, services, and rights for healthy lives

Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights

Sexual and reproductive health is a fundamental human right, yet millions of Nigerians lack access to essential information and services. At Care-Aid and Peace Foundation, our Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) program is transforming lives by ensuring that young people, women, and men across Nigeria have the knowledge, tools, and healthcare services they need to make informed decisions about their bodies, relationships, and futures.

Operating across 8 states—Edo, Delta, Rivers, Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Kaduna, and Abuja—our comprehensive SRH program has reached over 85,000 individuals with life-changing interventions that reduce maternal mortality, prevent unintended pregnancies, combat STIs including HIV/AIDS, and promote gender equality and bodily autonomy.

"When young people have accurate information and access to services, they can build healthier futures for themselves and their communities."

Our Comprehensive Approach

1. Family Planning Services and Education

Access to quality family planning is essential for maternal health, child wellbeing, and poverty reduction. Our family planning program provides:

Clinical Services

  • Contraceptive Methods: Full range of modern contraceptives including pills, injectables, implants, IUDs, and condoms—all provided free or at subsidized costs
  • Counseling: Personalized consultations helping individuals choose methods that fit their needs, health status, and life goals
  • Follow-up Care: Regular checkups, side effect management, and method switching support
  • Fertility Awareness: Natural family planning education for those who prefer non-hormonal options
  • Male Involvement: Vasectomy services and counseling encouraging male participation in family planning

Community Education

  • Community outreach sessions reaching remote rural areas with mobile clinics
  • Couples' workshops promoting shared reproductive decision-making
  • Religious and traditional leader engagement addressing myths and misconceptions
  • Door-to-door education campaigns in underserved neighborhoods
  • Radio programs in local languages (Edo, Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo)

Since 2020, we've provided family planning services to over 28,000 women and men, preventing an estimated 12,000 unintended pregnancies and contributing to significant reductions in maternal mortality in our program areas.

Impact Story: Chioma's Choice

Chioma, a 24-year-old mother of three from Delta State, was pregnant with her fourth child when she attended our family planning session. She learned about long-acting reversible contraceptives and, after counseling, chose an implant. "I can now space my children and pursue my education," she shares. "My health has improved, and I'm planning to start a business. I wish I had this information years ago."

2. Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE)

Knowledge is power. Our age-appropriate, evidence-based sexuality education programs equip young people with critical life skills:

In-School Programs

Curriculum-integrated lessons in 150+ secondary schools covering puberty, anatomy, reproduction, contraception, STIs, consent, healthy relationships, and gender equality. Teachers receive specialized training to deliver sensitive topics with confidence.

Out-of-School Youth

Community-based sessions reaching young people not enrolled in school through youth centers, religious organizations, and vocational training programs, ensuring no one is left behind.

Parent Engagement

Workshops equipping parents with skills and confidence to have open, age-appropriate conversations with their children about sexuality, puberty, and relationships.

Digital Platforms

Youth-friendly website and social media channels providing accurate information, myth-busting, and confidential Q&A, reaching thousands of young people online.

Our CSE programs have reached over 45,000 young people aged 10-24, with studies showing participants demonstrate significantly improved knowledge, more positive attitudes about gender equality, and greater likelihood of using contraception when sexually active.

3. Adolescent Health Programs

Adolescence is a critical period requiring specialized health services. Our adolescent health initiatives include:

  • Youth-Friendly Health Centers: Five dedicated clinics with trained providers offering judgment-free, confidential services for adolescents aged 10-19
  • Menstrual Health Management: Education, free menstrual products, and support for girls to stay in school during menstruation
  • Nutrition and Anemia Prevention: Supplements and counseling addressing adolescent girls' increased nutritional needs
  • Mental Health Support: Counseling services addressing anxiety, depression, body image issues, and peer pressure
  • Peer Education: Training adolescent peer educators who conduct sessions in their communities, creating trusted sources of information
  • School Health Services: Regular health screenings, immunizations, and health education in partner schools
  • Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention: Intensive support for at-risk girls, including mentorship, life skills training, and economic empowerment

Peer Educator Impact: Meet Aminat

Aminat, 17, from Kano State, is one of our 200+ trained peer educators. "Before this program, my friends and I didn't understand our bodies or how to protect ourselves," she explains. "Now I educate other girls about menstruation, contraception, and standing up against early marriage. I've helped 15 girls stay in school instead of dropping out due to pregnancy or forced marriage. This program changed my life and is helping me change others'."

4. STI Prevention and HIV/AIDS Awareness

Nigeria has one of the highest HIV burdens globally, and STIs remain a significant public health challenge. Our prevention programs include:

Prevention Services

  • HIV Testing: Free, confidential rapid testing with pre- and post-test counseling at our clinics and through mobile outreach
  • Condom Distribution: Free male and female condoms distributed through clinics, community outlets, and peer educators
  • Prevention Education: Community sessions teaching transmission routes, prevention methods, and challenging stigma
  • STI Screening and Treatment: Free testing and treatment for common STIs including syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia
  • PrEP Services: Pre-exposure prophylaxis for individuals at high risk of HIV infection
  • PMTCT Services: Prevention of mother-to-child transmission programs for HIV-positive pregnant women

Care and Support

  • Linkage to Treatment: Immediate connection to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for all HIV-positive individuals
  • Adherence Support: Counseling, reminder systems, and support groups to ensure treatment compliance
  • Stigma Reduction: Community dialogues and mass media campaigns challenging discrimination
  • Positive Living Programs: Psychosocial support, nutrition counseling, and income-generating activities for people living with HIV
  • Disclosure Support: Counseling helping individuals safely disclose status to partners and family

Through our HIV/STI prevention program, we've conducted over 35,000 HIV tests, identified 850 HIV-positive individuals and linked 98% to treatment, distributed 2.5 million condoms, and treated 4,200 STI cases. In our program areas, we've contributed to a 35% reduction in new HIV infections among youth aged 15-24.
